I dithered buying my ReadyNAS Duo because they were consistently reviewed as being slow.

Having taken the plunge, I agree that the user interface is slow, but in terms of data in/out, I can't fault the performance:

* Backing up across my Ethernet LAN from a Windows 7 PC is fine.
* Streaming music and movie to my LG PVR across WiFi (802.11g from a Linksys WRT54G) is fine.

Not having two spare 2TB disks handy, I purchased the diskless chassis and then two Seagate Barracuda Green ST2000DL003 disks for an all up cost of $528.99 with shipping. I probably could have shaved 5% off that if I'd been game to try some unknown online retailers, but I kept to ones I was comfortable with and paid a slight premium.

Installing the disks was painless, but the list of approved disks is not extensive and there are not many options for the larger capacity units. There are also some HDD firmware requirements to watch out for, as a few of the approved disks required certain firmware versions and ensuring you match them is not trivial when buying online.

Style-wise the unit looks good, a small solid box anodised matt black with discrete LEDS and silver feet. It is also quiet enough. Occasionally the fan will whir to the point of intrusiveness, but only for a minute or so. And the disks will click occasionally as they work hard but that's it.

One aspect I do have to check is physical security. There is a Kingston lock slot, and if that also locks the front panel then OK. But if not, your HDDs can be removed from the bay easy-peasy so that's something to consider.

So that's the hardware...

...oh, woo is the software.

It is not that the user interface is particularly bad, it is just slow and clunky. And as is typical with technical manuals these days, it describes "what" really well - but not "why". I'd like to set up user security so my unit is not broadcasting my backup files to all and sundry on my network. Seems like a common enough task, but it's not well covered in the manual. I'll figure it out with a bit of Googling, but it would be nice if it was laid out for me by the manufacturer.

Similarly, the built-in BitTorrent(tm) client (which opens in a separate browser window) is a great idea but the app itself is rudimentary and fails to launch consistently enough that I've had to restart the BitTorrent(tm) service on numerous occasions just to access the client. More distressing for my ISP bandwidth limit, the setting to cap outbound BitTorrent(tm) traffic as a % of inbound traffic did not seem to work and so my ReadyNAS Duo happily pumped out a few tens of GB while I slept. And I'd expect that the client would be integrated with the underlying file system, so if you delete a torrent it deletes the files. But that's not the case, so you have to do this separately from your PC.

The ReadyNAS Duo also includes an iTunes Streaming Server, which enables iTunes clients to stream media files from the ReadyNAS. I'll admit that I'm not well versed in all things Apple, so I've not been able to get my iPad to connect to this service. The service itself is Firefly, and various Google posts suggest I'll need an AirPlay device to make it all work, but other posts suggest I'll need to convert any movies to a format the iPad can view as the ReadyNAS Duo cannot do this on the fly, so I'm not sure it's worth the bother.

On the plus side, the ReadyDLNA service worked out of the box, being immediately seen by my LG PVR and posing no problem with streaming music and movies.

The one feature that I was particularly keen to utilise - data backup - is the most disappointing. NetGear bundle "NTI Shadow for ReadyNAS" and the idea is that it sits in the background on your PC and backs up your files to the ReadyNAS backup directory. The first backup went as expected, if slowly, what with a few hundred GB needing to be copied.

But the backup job to subsequently save my work was scheduled to run at 10pm each night, yet my PC and ReadyNAS chattered across the network at a furious rate all the time. The NTI Shadow for ReadyNAS showed the job "in progress" whenever I looked, yet the progress bar did not reflect anything happening. Fatally, the backup job choked on my Outlook .pst file - which was open - and did not seem to just ignore it and move on. It was not until I closed Outlook that it could back that file up and complete the job. (NetGear, please take a tip from Mozy and skip what you can't get to, you can always come back to it later.) More fatally, when I configured NTI Shadow for ReadyNAS to continually back up my files, it stopped working and triggered one of those "Windows can check online for a solution to the problem" messages.

But that reference to Mozy is a nice segue into NetGear's backup cloud service, ReadyNAS Vault. Looks good and appears safe and secure, but OUCH, the prices. 250GB, which is probably what most home users would want these days, is $799 per annum. Hmmm, I can get unlimited storage from CrashPlan for a tenth of that! Backing up 1TB with ReadyNAS Vault is a shade over $3,000 per year. Crazy stuff, why would you buy it? (I know the answer - your PC automatically backs up to the your ReadyNAS which automatically backs up to the cloud. It is disaster recovery nirvana.) I'm looking to see if any third-party cloud providers have created a service I can install to create a cheaper option because ReadyNAS Vault is just too rich for my blood.

So what's the conclusion to all this?

If you are looking for a streaming device I can recommend it.

If you are looking to centralise all your data storage - either as a backup server or as a central file server - then I have reservations. I expect I will sort out my backup regime, but out-of-the-box, the ReadyNAS Duo does not provide an easy to use way to backup your PCs.


Netgear RND2150-100NAS Review by RichM

Runs very quiet, steady and I recommend it. Requires some time to figure things out though.

1. Pre-purchase, I struggled to find out if the 2 T HD's I wanted were compatible. I Prefered 2T HD but found nothing but 1T HD recommendations online. Could have used the HD compatibility list I received after purchase.

2. Lion does not like the ReadyNAS software and an update was available and worked. Unfortunately it took a long time because people before me loaded beta versions and posted all kinds of warnings. It took a long while until I was able to contact tech support and they walked me through in trying the beta then the actual approved update came out. So keeping up with Apple's Lion upgrade for NAS Mfg.'s was a challenge. Timing is everything though.

3. Lion 64 bit software does not like Netgear's 32 bit remote software. Luckily you can boot up a Mac to 32 bit (hold 3 and 2 keys when starting up). Then ReadyNAS Remote works fine! And that is great!!! I love walking into Starbucks or Micky D's and accessing my stuff at home when I need to. Encrypted PW protection too. Remote is a Great feature!!!

4. Still learning the Netgear UI and will take a while but it has delivered, so far, on all selling points I've tried. After the learning curve though.

5. Not for beginners

6. Never saw the ReadyNAS Duo Pro2 until I took delivery. Would have liked to have considered that. Much improved feature set from what I have seen.

This thing is fantastic. I got this with two 2TB WD green hard drives. It took away the worries of a hard drive crash after I formatted it to RAID1. It took away the file and printer sharing issues I had. It made it possible to watch movies, look at pictures, and listen to music from my wifi bluray player with its DLNA feature. I can even access my files from work or on my iPhone with the ReadyNAS Remote app. It solved all the issues I had with storage all in one shot! No more using thumb drives to backup and copy from machine to machine.
